NLG – the team behind some of the North West’s most exciting and renowned restaurants, bars and entertainment venues – will manage and curate the offer within the new market hall, bringing a best-in-class experience to the heart of Wigan town centre.

The announcement comes as Wigan Council releases the first visuals of the new market hall: a bright, colourful and contemporary space featuring a blend of traditional market traders, a bakery, coffee shop, bars and a vibrant food hall.

Councillor David Molyneux MBE, Leader of Wigan Council, said: “This redevelopment is bringing the market back to the heart of the town centre, and I am delighted to be announcing this new operator during the nationwide Love Your Local Market campaign.

“Wigan has been a proud market town for centuries and we want to see our market survive and thrive into the future. It will play a vital role in bringing people into town, supporting local business and building community when it opens late next year.

“There is so much happening across our town – the redevelopment of Civic, Cotton Works at Eckersley Mill, STACK at the former Debenhams – making Wigan the place to be, live, work and visit.”**

Chris Hextall, who is leading the scheme for MM Management, said: “This is a pivotal step forward for Fettlers and for Wigan. The appointment of NLG is fantastic news, and we look forward to working closely with the team as the new market takes shape.”

Carl Fraenkl-Rietti, Managing Director of NLG, added:
“This will be one of the North’s best and most creative markets and food halls, putting Wigan proudly on the map not only for its food but for its incredible people for generations to come. Its location is superb, and we look forward to delivering a standout experience for traders, visitors and locals — a market they can be truly proud of.”

Watson Construction has been appointed to carry out the construction works, which are already underway.

Phase One of the scheme will deliver 63 high-quality two- and three-bedroom affordable homes, offered through a mix of shared ownership and rental tenures to meet significant local demand.

The development forms part of a transformational masterplan to regenerate 20 acres of former industrial land in Halebank, Widnes. When complete, the wider scheme will provide more than 300 new homes across multiple phases, turning a long-standing brownfield site—formerly home to Stobart and Tarmac operations, into a sustainable and thriving residential neighbourhood.

Following Cityheart’s appointment as Halton Borough Council’s development partner in 2022, the site has undergone extensive redesign and land remediation led by specialist contractor P.P. O’Connor. Sustainability has been a core design priority, with homes benefitting from enhanced thermal performance, photovoltaic solar panels and air source heat pumps.

MM Management Services is proud to be part of the core project team delivering this major programme alongside Corstorphine & Wright (architect), Curtins (engineer), Zerum (planner), DEP (landscape architect) and TACE (MEP).

Stockport’s new multi-million-pound, state-of-the-art transport interchange and rooftop park was opened to the public in a historic and landmark moment for the town. The occasion was marked by speeches from Cityheart executive chair, Mark McNamee, Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham and Leader of Stockport Council, Cllr Mark Hunter. MM director John McGuinness was there for the momentous occasion.

The modern and attractive transport hub is redefining the town’s connectivity and contains a new two-acre park, recently named as Viaduct Park, new walking and cycling links to the railway station and the town centre and is the first phase of the transformational regeneration of Stockport Town Centre West.

The Interchange has been delivered on time and on budget by Stockport Council, Transport for Greater Manchester and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, alongside construction company Willmott Dixon.

And in a further boost to Stockport’s £1bn town centre regeneration journey, this summer the landmark new 14-storey residential development with 196 one and two-bedroom apartments and commercial space will open as part of the scheme, developed by Cityheart and Rise Homes. MM Management is proud to be working as residential operators’ representative on this landmark scheme.

The park is the first of its kind in the UK and provides a green space for residents from across the borough to enjoy, featuring play equipment, festoon lighting and an events pavilion that will help to connect neighbourhoods and communities.

Under construction since 2021, the £140m Interchange has sustainability at its heart – opening up public transport and active travel options to people from across the area, improving air quality and reducing congestion.

It features a host of green technologies including a ‘blue-roof’ rainwater attenuation system and an array of photo voltaic panels.

The project represents an innovative approach to development, combining transport improvements, residential development and the creation of new green space – helping support the objectives of Stockport Council, the Mayor of Greater Manchester and GMCA.

The residential and commercial element of the scheme will welcome residents and businesses in June.

Exciting announcement at Wigan Galleries, where we are providing Employers Agent, and Quantity Surveying services. Wigan Council, in collaboration with development partner Cityheart, has signed a franchise agreement with Hilton for a Hampton by Hilton branded 144-bedroom, 5,800 m2 hotel, as part of the £135 million redevelopment of the former Galleries Shopping Centre.

Designed by JM Architects, the Hampton by Hilton hotel will be a six-storey building located off Market Street in Wigan’s town centre and will be managed and operated by Leaf Hospitality.

The hotel bedrooms will be complemented by a gym on level one overlooking the new square with the main reception area and dining space on the ground floor. Each accommodation level will also have accessible rooms and secure parking will be available for guests. Leaf Hospitality anticipates employing more than 60 staff at the new hotel, providing a range of job opportunities for local residents.

The hotel is one of the most important elements brought forward under the Galleries redevelopment masterplan, helping to create the critical evening and weekend footfall required to bring new visitors back into the heart of the town centre. The hotel will be located directly opposite the bus station entrance of New Market Street and is within 500 yards of both town centre train stations.

The announcement is the latest development for the multi-phase regeneration scheme since demolition work was concluded on time in February and main contractor Galliford Try was announced for phase one last week.

Councillor David Molyneux MBE, Leader of Wigan Council, said: “Following last week’s announcement of Galliford Try as our new development partner for the first phase of building work, it is really exciting to welcome Hilton to this multimillion pound redevelopment.

“This is a well-known and prestigious brand coming to Wigan. It demonstrates the confidence that investors, businesses and partners have with a new market hall, cinema, bowling alley, bars and restaurants, alongside the Hampton by Hilton, coming to our town centre.”

Graham Dodd, Managing Director Development, Hilton UK & Ireland, said: “Our partnership with Wigan Council marks an exciting new chapter, as part of Hilton’s growing presence in the North West. We were impressed by the Council and Cityheart’s vision to provide a thriving new retail, leisure, commercial and residential destination and are excited to be part of Wigan’s transformation. We look forward to welcoming guests to Hampton by Hilton and showcasing the town’s great potential to our global network.”

Warren Taylor, Chief Operating Officer of Cityheart commented: “The introduction of a high-quality hotel for Wigan centre is a key part of the agreed masterplan and will be critical to the rejuvenation of the town by increasing and raising the standard of accommodation available. Hilton is one of the world’s most recognised hotel brands. Within its portfolio, Hampton by Hilton is a strong and well-respected brand and we are incredibly pleased to have secured it for Wigan as we look to create a vibrant and enticing town centre offering for visitors and local people alike.”

P.P.O’Connor is currently on site, making significant progress in preparing the cleared site for delivery of phase one, which includes the Hampton by Hilton hotel, a new market hall and food court.

This initial phase will be closely followed with the construction of the Pavilion building and the MMC followed by 464 homes across seven new residential buildings and a retirement living complex.

We are delighted to announce that the demolition phase of the £135m Wigan Galleries redevelopment programme is now complete. MM Management is providing Employers Agent, and Quantity Surveying services for the scheme.

BCEGI, working with specialist demolition contractor Rhodar Industrial Services Limited, were appointed to undertake the first stage of the works and an eighteen-month phased programme of demolition across the 41,000 m sq site began in July 2022 and successfully completed this week.

That work has now concluded on schedule and specialist groundwork contractor P.P. O’Connor has been appointed to undertake the next phase of ground enabling works, ahead of a main contractor for the development of phase one being appointed in the coming weeks. P.P O’Connor has made an immediate start on site and will be undertaking archaeology and site investigation works in the coming weeks.

Commenting on the landmark milestone for the development Warren Taylor, Chief Operating Officer of Cityheart said: “BCEGI has undertaken an extensive programme of very complex and carefully sequenced site remediation and demolition works which has progressed at pace over the last year and a half. Managing and maintaining the programme over such a complex space is testament to the fantastic work BCEGI and Rhodar have delivered in clearing and levelling this complex site, paving the way for the first phase of construction work which will commence in the coming months.”

Commenting on their involvement with the next stage of the Galleries development, Charmaine O’Connor, CEO at P.P. O’Connor, said: “We are pleased to support our long-standing client Cityheart with this major redevelopment project and look forward to helping to deliver the next phase of works.”

Leader of Wigan Council, Councillor David Molyneux MBE, said: “We’re really pleased with the progress of the former Galleries scheme so far and look forward to working with P.P.O’Connor on this important next phase.

“A key priority for us on this project is to ensure maximum return on our investment by securing opportunities for local skills and employment and I’m pleased local residents are already reaping those benefits.”

During the demolition phase Rhodar employed a variety of techniques including large scale mechanical machinery and hand demolition to protect the adjacent Grade II listed structures.
Up to 50 operatives have been working on the demolition phase including two of Rhodar’s youngest employees as part of their apprenticeships. Rhodar has also been working with local church groups, charities and youth organisations as well as offering local employment opportunities for site and office staff.

With a focus on the highest levels of sustainability, materials have been reused to create development platforms for the new buildings and over 10,000 roof slates have been reclaimed for re-use, together with 1,000 tonnes of mixed metals, 60,000 tonnes of bricks and concreate hard core for re-use.

Cityheart were appointed by Wigan Council as its strategic development partner for the £135m redevelopment of The Galleries shopping centre in June 2021. Since the Development Agreement was signed a hybrid planning consent for the full site has been secured.

The first phase of the development is set to start this year and will deliver a new market hall and food court, a new 144-bedroom hotel and the basement and associated infrastructure. This initial phase will be closely followed with the commencement of construction for the Pavilion building and the Cinema and Leisure space.
